Here’s what each side is saying about the State of the Union speech

The effectiveness of President Trump’s State of the Union address depends largely on whom you ask.

The president Tuesday used his annual opportunity to speak directly to the American people to highlight his priorities, including immigration, as another funding deadline looms and the 2020 presidential campaign season begins in earnest.

Major national newspapers noted the split personality of the speech: an appeal to unity and healing followed by direct and sometimes vivid attacks on Democrats over immigration and abortion rights.
